After being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in December of 2007, I immediately began extensive chemotherapy treatments. These were followed by a bilateral mastectomy in June of 2008 and then seven weeks of radiation. Because of participation in a clinical trial I was afforded the opportunity for follow-up treatments that continued until January 2009. My follow-up visit that same month declared me cancer-free!
I was ready to be more active and get back in shape. After reading that hooping is an excellent way to accomplish this, my 3 youngest children and I headed to the local discount store and bought a hula hoop for each of us. At home, the 'fun' began. The kids were having a blast. I, on the other hand, found that my work-out consisted of bending over and picking the hoop up off of the floor. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't keep the crazy thing going around my hips. After some research I found that adult-sized bodies need adult-sized hoops. Not being able to find large hoops at any store near my home, I decided that it would be a fun project for our family to make our own hoops (it wasn't quite as easy as it sounds, but it sure was fun!) I was so thankful to find that adult-sized hoops really do work for adult-sized bodies! I also found that hooping not only met a physical need in my life, but it encouraged lots of fun and laughter with my family.
Thus, Hoops for Healing was born. Hoops for Healing is one of the many ways that I've seen God's goodness come from the long, arduous journey called 'cancer'. It is my honor to share the joy of hooping with you.
